Chronic Pain Management, Narcotics and Other Controlled Substances
As a general rule, WE DO NOT MANAGE CHRONIC PAIN and will not routinely prescribe controlled substances on an ongoing basis. We recognize many people live with chronic pain and understand the necessity of controlling such pain. We also recognize chronic pain management as a specialized field of medicine and believe the long-term treatment of chronic pain should be addressed by a board-certified pain management physician in an accredited pain management center. Just as you would expect us to refer you to a general surgeon to have your gallbladder removed, or to a cardiologist for heart disease, you should expect a referral to a pain management specialist for chronic pain management.
As a general rule, WE DO NOT ROUTINELY PRESCRIBE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES FOR THE LONG-TERM TREATMENT OF ANXIETY. Anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed for the SHORT TERM treatment of acute anxiety, but will not be prescribed for routine long-term use. Family Practice providers are experienced in the diagnosis and management of anxiety and depression and see patients with these issues on a regular basis. Antidepressants and certain other anti-anxiety medications outside of the controlled substance classes can be prescribed as needed.
Prescription Medication Refills
PLEASE CALL YOUR PHARMACY three to five days before refills are needed; the pharmacy will forward the information to us in an electronic format. Once we review your chart, refill(s) will be approved when appropriate. You will be notified if you need lab work or if due for an office visit; if this is the case, we will (in most cases) provide a one-month refill to allow you time to schedule your appointment. Please make certain you have an ample supply of medication well ahead of vacations, holidays, and throughout hurricane season.
Self-diagnosis and requesting antibiotics by phone are strongly discouraged. If you feel you need a prescription medication for an acute illness, it is in your best interest to be evaluated in the office. We will not prescribe narcotics or other controlled substances by phone; likewise, we will not prescribe or refill antibiotics by phone.
Please bring all current prescription medications to each appointment. This gives your provider the opportunity to review your medications and instructions for use with you. This is especially important if your medications are prescribed by different providers.
Appointment Times and Appointment Cancellations
We respect that your time is valuable and will do our best to stay on schedule. Please understand that emergent situations are unpredictable. Should such occur around your scheduled appointment, we will inform you of any delay and commit to turning our undivided attention to you once the situation is resolved.
If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please do so at least 24 hours in advance so that your appointment time can be opened for other patients. A no-show fee may be charged if you fail to keep a confirmed appointment.
FAQS
What Is a Nurse Practitioner?
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse who has completed graduate-level education through a Master’s or Doctoral degree program. Following completion of extensive didactic and clinical requirements, Nurse Practitioners sit for a National Board Certification Examination in their specialty area.
Nurse Practitioners obtain a comprehensive history, perform complete physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic studies such as labs and x-rays, and prescribe medications under the direction of a supervising physician. This allows for the diagnosis and treatment of common acute illnesses and injuries as well as the diagnosis and management of chronic illnesses such as asthma, anxiety, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep disorders, thyroid disease, etc. Nurse Practitioners excel in prevention, wellness, and patient education by engaging patients in their care.
Do you take my insurance?
We are credentialed with most major insurance carriers including Medicare. We do not accept Medicaid primary, but do accept it as secondary coverage.
Do you see people without insurance?
Yes, we accept self-pay patients; however, payment is due at time of service. We offer a discounted schedule for office visits and laboratory services for self-pay patients.
Do you treat work-related injuries?
We do not accept worker’s compensation insurance and therefore do not treat work-related injuries.
Do you see kids?
Yes, we see children and would rather have you bring them to our office than to the ER; however, young children are best served by a pediatrician and should maintain a relationship with the pediatrician until well into the teen years. We will be happy to see your children if your pediatrician is not immediately available.
What happens if I am admitted to the hospital?
Our patients are admitted to a hospitalist service (a group of physicians specializing in hospital-based medicine).
